How to update Symantec Virus Definitions for NAV 2001-2005.

  1. To update the annual virus definitions subscription you are going to purchase a code number consisting of numbers and letters, uppercase. Don't upgrade to a new program unless you have a good reason to tie up the network with a large file down. Use LiveUpdate to go to Subscription Services. You will get a report that the subscription is about to expire, or already has expired. You will be asked to renew.

If you are using Norton 2005, go to Help and Support. Select Renewal Services. Or,  next to the definitions label you will see a Renewal button. Select Renewal to start the update process.

3. If you have the subscription renewal code number already, here is where you use it. Place the mouse cursor inside the bottom window labeled "Type the subscription key for the selected subscription service:" and enter the code number. Use uppercase for the letters as the subscription number may be case sensitive.

If you don't have a subscription code already, you will have to purchase one. Get your credit card and select the worldwide offices and select link for US, or go to

http://www.symanctec.com/subscribe/us/

Leave this window open. You will need it later when you have purchased the subscription number.

4. The web browser will launch (it may be IE, Mozilla, FireFox, etc), and will go

to the Symantec Store (http://www.symantecstore.com). This starts the process of purchasing another year’s subscription number.

5. You should be in the web site location, Products\ Upgrades and Renewals.

Upgrades and Renewals

6. Go near the bottom and select “Select your Upgrade or Renewal Product”. Enter your product such as

“Norton Antivirus”

and

“2002 for Windows 2000/NT/Me/98/XP”.

Don't Norton Antivirus Professional as that version uses completely different codes.

Select version of NAV

7. Read this next page carefully…

Select version of NAV

Notice that at the top they “recommend the upgrades”, but in orange below that you will

See the text, “No thank you. Please just renew my subscription for $29.99”.

That is what you want to select, the subscription renewal!! Not the upgrade in most cases. If you select upgrade you will have to download an entire program of about 25-30 MB.

Then you get the security warning when you enter a purchasing mode…

Select OK and continue.

8. Now you fill out the form and purchase as many subscriptions for your office or PC as you need.
